ALCAN HIGHWAY
VHS-806 · 30 minutes · 1975 ·$14.95
Also available on DVD-411
Historic 1942 film of the Army Engineers' construction of the Alcan Highway is featured in this trip with Lynden Transport Incorporated on the 1500-mile Alcan Highway from Dawson Creek to Fairbanks, with stops at Fort Nelson, Watson Lake, Contact Creek, Whitehorse, ghost town Kluane, Beaver Creek and Tetlin Junction.
Here's an excerpt from the program, by narrator Don McCune:
The Alcan Highway is the miracle road hacked out of the wilderness as a military expedient between Dawson Creek and the Interior of Alaska, when the Japanese invaders held the islands in the Aleutian chain. Faced with a land invasion through Alaska, the United States realized the need for an overland highway and a string of air bases to the arctic. It was started in March, three months after Pearl Harbor. The wilderness that up until then had been penetrated only by a few Indians or an occasional trapper, now resounded with the growl of crawler tractors and the roar of trucks. The objective was to punch a road through 1400 miles of the most rugged terrain on the continent and to do it as quickly as possible.
Plunging northward with all the reckless determination of a bull moose, the Alaska Highway is a strong taskmaster, especially for those who tackle it driving an eighteen-wheel truck. We'll ride along with them on a winter run over one of the most fascinating and dangerous highways in North America.
Fueled by pipeline fever, the rush was on to the far north slope with cargo pouring in from the lower 48 states, creating what was to be the biggest shipping project in history."
Originally aired under the title Eighteen Wheels North.
BACKPACKING THE OLYMPICS
VHS-101 · 50 minutes · 1975 · $19.95
Also available on DVD-201 (Backpacking)
An exciting 8-day trek across the Bailey Ridge in Washington's Olympic Mountains starts at Sol Duc Hot Springs, covering the same territory as Disney filmed in its 1930's Olympic Elk feature with Herb Crisler. Crossing Low Divide, the party travels the route of the 1890 Press expedition. The trail ends near Lake Quinault.
Here's an excerpt from the program, by narrator Don McCune:
"Bounded on the south by the lowlands of the Chehalis Valley, on the east by Hood Canal, on the North by the Strait of Jaun de Fuca, and on the West by the Pacific Ocean, Washington's Olympic Mountains stand alone, isolated from other ranges. Dominated by the triple-crowned and glacier-clad Mount Olympus, its eastern flank parallels the upper Hoh River Canyon along a chain of peaks known as the Bailey Range, by which it is possible to cross the Olympics from north to south entirely in the high country."
A scenic adventure for those who hanker for the pleasures of hard-won solitude in the setting of rugged grandeur.

Here's an excerpt from the program, by narrator Don McCune:
"Leaving the Canadian border at Manning Park, the hikers enter the Pasayten Wilderness where they soon buckle down to the rigors of the trail. Crossing Harts Pass on the third day, they stopped to set up another camp. Looking back they will discover that happiness has something to do with simple things, which in the wilderness, is often cloaked in beauty. From Hopkins Pass the Pacific Crest Trail switchbacks sharply above and west of the amphitheater contain Hopkins Lake to The Devil's Stairway."

BIG TIMBER
VHS-801 · 30 MINUTES · 1971 ·$14.95
Also available on DVD-102 (Logging & Railroad History)
A nostalgic flashback to the days when high-riggers ruled the big forests, this episode was filmed with the St. Regis Timber Company near Morton, Washington. Highlights from the 1971 Morton Loggers Jubilee add flavor to this story logging of techniques of the past and present day.
Here's an excerpt from the program, by narrator Don McCune:
"Three-quarters of a century ago, the land where the town of Morton Washington now stands was a virgin forest with a few Indian trails along the banks of the rivers leading into the more open country of the Big Bottom. The stand of timber was so heavy that pioneers complained that the only way you could see the sky was to look straight up!
oday they're stilling logging virgin timber around Morton, and each year in August the town celebrates its birthright at the Morton loggers Jubilee.
Line many other Northwest logging towns, the big name around Morton is Pseudotsuga menziesii, the botanical name for Douglas Fir. Described by botanists first as a pine, then as a fir, but actually is neither, over the years this contradictory conifer has played a major role in the state's number one industry, an industry born of tides of timber that challenged the sky and men who could judge the lean of a tree with an ax handle; who could place the undercut with the precision of a slide rule."

CANOES ON THE CLEARWATER
VHS-702 · 30 minutes · 1971 ·$14.95
The Exploration Northwest crew makes an historic last canoe trip down the north fork of Idaho's Clearwater River just before Dworshak Dam closes its gates to flood the river canyon. Excerpts from a 1962 Exploration Northwest episode of the last Potlatch Log Drive on the Clearwater adds historic logging detail.
Here's an excerpt from the program, by narrator Don McCune:
"For forty years, the North Fork of the Clearwater River helped carry the annual harvest of sawlogs to the Potlatch Mill at Lewiston before the dam was built at Orofino. Also, it had also been the target for canoeing enthusiasts for its whitewater challenge. In full flood, Idaho's Clearwater North Fork contributed up to 100,000 cubic feet per second to the mainstream Clearwater that drains a sizeable portion of the Bitter Root Mountains located in the northern part of the state. We launched our canoes 90 miles above Orofino at the Aquarius Campground."
Clint McCune, Don McCune's younger son, who is an actor and musician, recorded the narration for this remastered program, from his father's script, written years before Clint was born.

Here's an excerpt from the program, by narrator Don McCune:
Primed for battle, the Columbia River meets the sea as an adversary; a confrontation whose history is one of destruction, and whose peace-keeping is a never-ending struggle. Over the years, those who must contend with the Pacific as it batters the Northwest coastline have come to endure its nasty temper, and if possible, outlast it. Destruction Island, Cape Foulweather, Cape Disappointment, even the names suggest the degree of struggle. The storms are capable of striking with mindless ferocity.
The Coast Guard's Grays Harbor Lifesaving Station was established in 1898 and its suicidal motto was 'You have to go out, but you don't have to come back.'"
